The school had no building of its own at that time and lessons had to be carried out in SRK Bau, a Primary school whose building was situated on a small hill.
Across the road, a hundred meters away, was the famous Bau Lake. This Lake was a popular holiday resort with both the local people and residents from Kuching as well as with foreigners and tourists, until 1990, when it was closed to give way to the opening of a goldmine, where operations are still being carried out up till today.
At the end of 1983, SMK Paku began to have its own building. A block of 8 classrooms and another block consisting of the Office and the Staffroom was built next to the building of SRK Bau. In 1984, a Junior Secondary Science Laboratory was added. A volleyball court and a badminton court was also constructed on a self-help basis. The school also started to conduct lessons both in the morning and afternoon as it did not have to make use of the facilities from its neighbouring school.
In 1985 a toilet block was built as well as a storeroom for storing the science equipment and apparatus. The school also entered the first batch of form 3 students to sit for the SRP examination, which is the first public examination conducted in Malaysia for all students who have completed 3 years of secondary education.
In 1987, a library was built as well as a store which acted as a canteen to serve the students during breaktime.
From the above brief history, it can be seen that the school had a humble beginning. There was no additional physical development after 1987 as there was no more space for expansion. In fact, the school site lacked many facilities, there were no spare classroom to conduct extra lessons nor facilities to conduct games other than volleyball and badminton. Dispite the odds, the school performed remarkably well in the acedamic field as well as in extra-curricular activities.
In January 1994 a sink hole appeared at the back of the school. In February, a sink hole appeared right outside the doorsteps of one of the classroom. Several emergency meetings were held and in March, the school was directed to move out, to be temporarily placed in the premisis of SMK Lake, another government secondary school, which is located some 2 km away.
Temporary
School
On April 11, the transfer was effected and the school was given a block of Classrooms, a Staffroom, an Office, a Science Laboratory and a Home Science room,in SMK Lake. In terms of facilities, however, the school is no better off than before.
New
School Site
However, in the midst of all this drama, there is now a light at the end of the tunnel. After waiting for over 12 years, it looks like the school will soon have its dream fulfilled. At the end of 1994, tenders were called for the construction and completion of the new school, whose site is about 6-7 km away from Bau Town itself. Construction works began before the end of 1995. The new school site covering an area of about 30-40 acres is expected to be completed in mid 1997.
